We’ve got to do better as a community

eScootNews.com started because of our love for both eScooters and a love of green commuting. One thing we noticed very quickly however, was the lack of positive news coverage. It's horrid, really.

Man riding an eScooter in NYC.

Sure, eScooters are not entirely the safest form of transportation on the planet. By design, they have a bit of a weird center of gravity that doesn't always lend it self to safe riding. I'm surprised however when I look at accidents involving eScooters how much blame is being put on the riders and not the people who hit them. I'm not saying eScooters riders are never to blame, but this seems like it's being portrayed in a bit of a one-sided fashion.

As a community, it's our responsibility to promote a safe riding culture.
  • Time and time again, we continue to see that a number of accidents with head trauma. Many bikers wear helmets. Skateboarders are the same. eScooter riders, however, have not seemed to pick up on this yet. Wear a helmet, and other protective gear if you deem it necessary.
  • Clean up after yourselves. I've traveled so far this year to almost 100 cities, many with eScooter ride share programs. What do I always see? eScooters thrown all over the place, as if people don't like nice things. It's simple: Take care of the environment around you.
  • eScooters are fun to ride, but we need to be mindful of how we're riding. The laws do apply to us too. In NYC, you can get a ticket for riding through a red light. Don't be that guy. Follow your local laws and set a great example for the plenty of new riders we're gaining each day.
  • Choose products that are made well. Cheap is expensive (in the long run), and often inexpensive products lead to injuries due to build quality. Pay careful attention to what you're buying.

Did you know...

That we made a list of a variety of helmets so you can find one suitable for your riding style? Find out how you can choose the best helmet for your next eScooter outing.

As eScooters evolve, I'm looking forward to seeing the positive news and reviews that come out of our sites and others. Invite your friends out for a ride, and show them how much fun riding can be. Start clubs. Go on group rides. Let's help make the eScooter community a better place!
