Why is that such a big deal?

By the laws of the State of New York, eBikes and eScooters are not defined and this has left lawmakers in a position where they haven't figured out how to regulate them.

This has been an even bigger concern in New York City over the past few years as there has been a push to legalize these forms of transportation but due to a law that passed in 2004, eScooters have not only been illegal to operate there but they carry a $500 fine for operating one. Currently, Senator Ramos has introduced new legislation to help legalize eScooters and eBikes in the State of New York.

State Senator Jessica Ramos was quoted as saying, "Legalizing eBikes and eScooters will provide New Yorkers with alternative means of transportation that are affordable and environmentally friendly." Although the air in New York City is cleaner than it ever has been, there is still a lot to be done concerning the pollution in the air.

Other areas of the state

Regardless of the situation in New York City, other areas of the state could benefit from the laws being changed as well. New York is also home to Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester and Albany; all cities with large populations that could benefit from more green transportation initiatives. Senator Ramos also went on to say, "As we aim to reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion, we want to empower municipalities to set their own rules as populations across the city differ."

New Rules

The Senator has also proposed that if legalized, eBikes and eScooters and eScooters should weigh no more than 100 pounds, and must not exceed speeds of 20 miles per hour. She's looking to give them the same rights as regular bike riders. Ramos says, "New York is one of the last states in the country that has yet to legalize and define eBikes and eScooters."
