Review: Inokim Light

Inokim's Light eScooter is one of the easiest ways to get around town. Needing a last-mile solution for a quick commute without losing out on features of some higher-end scooters? The Inokim Light delivers where many others in its' weight class don't.

Easy Rider

The Light model isn't just lightweight- it's a great machine that makes simple commutes even easier. This very simple design features a really great build quality, too. It features 6061 T6 Aluminum which is more typically found in a lot of bicycle frames. It's beautiful and rigid, and you can be assured that it will stand up to the abuse of your commute.

Admittedly, the design of it is very simple but clean in a typical Inokim fashion. Like many other Inokim models, this Light 2 features a telescopic front handlebar/stem package with their fashionable red clamp. Although there's no suspension available on this particular model, it still rides comfortably due to the 8.5" pneumatic tires. I wouldn't necessarily want to ride it over any uneven terrain, but if you're riding on sidewalks and streets that have been decently taken care of, you won't even think about missing the suspension. If you have a need for suspension, you should probably be eyeing Inokim's Quick model

The Inokim Light 2 in one of the Manhattan locations

After taking this scooter out for a 2 mile demo ride, I was pleasantly surprised that the 36v 250w motor moved me so well. Acceleration was comfortable while still being quick. Even though the top speed of 15mph lines up with a lot of other eScooters, I felt very safe and at ease while I was riding this around the New York City Streets. I have full confidence that this scooter can keep up with the traffic in bike lanes and yet still operate safely on sidewalks as well

When monitoring the stats on my ride, I felt that the LCD display was adequate and easily controllable. Like many other eScooters on the market, the Light model features 3 different modes (or gears, if you will) that allow you to have sequentially better top speeds and better acceleration as you move up- but coming at the cost of draining the battery more as you use higher gears. On this particular LCD unit, there's an up and down button on the right hand side for mode control, and you can change modes while you're riding. A good use case for this would be if you were riding behind a slower rider and needed to go around. Moving up a mode would likely give you enough acceleration and top speed to make the pass. The display also includes a very readable odometer and battery meter which were very visible for me during daylight riding.

What Sets Them Apart

Source: Inokim

One thing that Inokim offers to their customers in NYC is a thing that sets them apart from all the rest: They offer full service by trained technicians in their Manhattan shops. Flat tire? Battery Issue? Need a spare part? They've got you covered and they're ready, able, and willing to take care of all of your service needs.

Inokim also uses high quality parts. From my understanding from talking with the Inokim employees, the scooters are designed in Israel, although they are manufactured in China.

Overall Impressions

Inokim shows constantly that they can make a quality eScooter with quality materials, as well as thoughtfulness for the needs of every style of rider, and the Light fits perfectly in its category. I was super happy with the ride although I would have enjoyed a little bit of suspension. The frame is beautifully constructed and I really enjoyed the center of gravity while riding.

I think the only downside for me is that the scooter felt a little bit short for me, a tall rider. I'm 6'2". I felt like if I were an even 6' tall, I would have had significantly less issues, but I felt like I had to lean over too far for my liking. As well, the price point feels a little bit high for me. With that being said, when you're buying Inokim, you're buying a quality machine.

If you're looking to purchase one for yourself, I'd highly recommend visiting the Inokim stores in Manhattan. If you're an online buyer, Urban Machina has an excellent selection of Inokim products.

When we discovered that Inokim was opening two new locations in Manhattan, we went down to visit and spend time with the employees who educated us about all of the models. The video below is a summary of our experiences at Inokim and a brief overview of each individual model that they had in the shop.
