For a long time, the State of New York has been debating whether or not eScooters and eBikes should be allowed on the streets. By the state laws, the vehicles have not been allowed to operate on streets or sidewalks- or anywhere for that matter. New York City, New York

For a long time, the State of New York has been debating whether or not eScooters and eBikes should be allowed on the streets. By the state laws, the vehicles have not been allowed to operate on streets or sidewalks- or anywhere for that matter. Now that the state is moving forward- and has passed legislation which gives individual towns and cities the ability to decide whether or not to adopt micro mobility concepts on their streets.

On Monday, State lawmakers announced that they are putting an end to the ban on eScooters with legislation passing on Wednesday. Part of this new legislation gives people 18 and older the right to ride eScooters and eBikes in the state of New York as long as they don't ride on the sidewalk. Although eScooters are now legal in the state of New York, cities now have to decide how they choose to move forward. For the time being, this still means that eScooters are not legal in Manhattan yet.

The move is potentially a great one for both Bird and Lime, who have constantly been pushing to change the laws in order to put eScooters on the streets of NY. This could mean a real change in pace for commuters in New York City especially- offering a new alternative to the grind of getting to and from work or school. Truly, it's been a very difficult road for governments to learn how to regulate eScooters. Through numerous pilot programs and studies, it's been difficult to determine an outline of best practices. Some cities like Charlotte, NC have flourished with eScooters, but many others continue to show too many injuries due to riders not wearing helmets.
