Recently I found out about a helmet called "Lumos" from another friend in the eScooter community. I did a little bit of research and ended up on the company's website where I saw their tagline and I was immediately drawn in: "The world's first smart bicycle helmet that integrates front and rear lights, hard brake, and turn signals into a single cohesive whole." Ok, now I'm paying attention.
Lumos has created an incredibly cool helmet. For all of the things it does, it's still quite lightweight at 380 grams. The new versions have soft Lycra padding, a new upgraded charging point, but let's talk about why this helmet is important:
Part One
Two of the three models of Lumos helmets contain the ability to put turn signals and braking into the lights built on the back of the helmet. How? Two ways: You can either install the remote onto your eScooter handlebars, or you can link it with an Apple Watch which will translate your arm movements when you're making turn signals, into signal lights on the back of the helmet. Concerning connectivity, the helmet also syncs with Apple's Health app, and the Strava App for extra stats.
Part Two
The most expensive model is built upon MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) which helps reduce injury in certain types of nasty falls. The MIPS website says, "In a helmet with MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS) the shell and the liner are separated by a Low Friction Layer. When a helmet with MIPS Brain Protection System is subjected to an angled impact, the low friction layer allows the helmet to slide relative to the head. The MIPS BPS is designed to add protection in helmets against the rotational motion. The rotational motion is a combination of rotational energy (angular velocity) and rotational forces (from angular acceleration) that both affects the brain and increases the risk for minor and severe brain injuries. MIPS BPS has been scientifically proven to reduce rotational motion when implemented in a helmet by absorbing and redirecting rotational energies and forces transferred to the brain." These are great things all types of riders, and it certainly helps us to be a lot more protected while riding. This is a helmet that could absolutely save your life in the event of an awful fall. Further researching online, I found a number of cases where people with this helmet had fall and the helmet's MIPS system worked perfectly and the end result? They bought another helmet to make sure that they were protected in the future.
What are the three models?
The Bottom Line
You'll be safer if you're wearing a helmet like this. You'll have a far greater visibility while you're riding on the streets, day or night. With MIPS built in, you've got more protection for your head when you fall.
I hope I can get my hands on one of these very soon.
